How to Improve the Cesarean Experience

As we discussed in our previous blog post, Health Benefits of Vaginal Birth, we support all parents, no matter how they give birth.
In this post, we’d like to discuss how to mitigate some of the potential negative health effects of Cesarean delivery in order to help you have the best postpartum experience and to help your baby have the healthiest possible start in life.

To review, these were the 5 health benefits of vaginal delivery discussed in our previous post: Healthy Flora, Cranial Moulding, Spinal Alignment, Skin-to-skin, and Easier Recovery.

  1. Healthy Flora. Many moms who undergo Cesarean deliveries are incorporating “seeding” into their birth plan to help mimic the healthy bacteria benefit of vaginal delivery. The safety of this practice is somewhat debated within the scientific community - if you'd like to incorporate this into your birth plan, be sure to ask your provider and make sure it's not contraindicated in your case.

  2. Cranial Moulding. Having your baby evaluated and, if necessary, adjusted by your chiropractor as soon as possible after birth can help imitate the cranial moulding that typically occurs when the head passes through the birth canal.

  3. Spinal Alignment. Again, having your baby evaluated and, if necessary, adjusted by your chiropractor as soon as possible after birth can help to correct any structural shifts caused during delivery.

  4. Skin-to-skin. Gentle Cesareans, which incorporate immediate skin-to-skin contact between the baby and their parents are on the rise across the country. If you’re choosing a Cesarean delivery, talk with your provider about the possibility of a Gentle Cesarean.

  5. Easier Recovery. Cesarean Sections are technically a major surgery – the abdominopelvic cavity is being operated on. Recovery from major surgery can complicate the newborn and postpartum period by making it more difficult for you to care for yourself and for your baby. To combat this, it is important to have a good support network. Consider hiring a postpartum doula to help you during this period of adjustment and recovery.

Whether you had a planned Cesarean or an emergency Cesarean, these tips can help you to start you and your baby off on the right foot and achieve many of the health benefits typically associated with a vaginal delivery.
